BRAZORIA COUNTY (HEIGHTSTONIAN) -- It's hurricane season and although you may have experienced cooler days, we are expected to have more rainfall this summer and it's also supposed to be an active hurricane season. Today, a severe coastal flood warning is in effect for Brazoria County islands and Gulf-facing beaches, including the Matagorda Peninsula, Brazoria County beaches, Galveston Island, and the Bolivar Peninsula.

This warning remains in place until 7 a.m. (Texas time) Thursday. Additionally, a high rip current risk is active through late Wednesday night.

What to Expect:

  • Coastal Flooding: Significant flooding is anticipated in coastal areas.
  • Dangerous Rip Currents: Strong rip currents pose a danger and can pull swimmers into deeper water.

Impacts

  • Numerous roads may be closed.
  • Low-lying properties, including homes, businesses, and critical infrastructure, could be flooded.
  • Shoreline erosion is expected.

Safety Tips:

  • Protect flood-prone property and avoid driving through flooded areas.
  • If swimming, stay near a lifeguard and avoid rocks, jetties, and piers.
  • If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Do not swim against the current. Swim parallel to the shore if possible, and signal for help if needed.
